Another Historic Milestone in Azerbaijani Healthcare: Successful Heart Transplantation from a Deceased Donor
The healthcare system of the Republic of Azerbaijan is currently undergoing a historic phase of development and transformation.
As a result of the consistent, systemic, and comprehensive reform measures implemented under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the national healthcare sector has entered a new era of progress and modernization.
Initiatives and projects initiated and supported by the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Her Excellency Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, have played an instrumental role in ensuring the sustainable and multifaceted advancement of the country’s healthcare system.
The Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan received a notification from the Sabunchu Medical Center concerning a patient diagnosed with brain death.
The Coordination Center immediately undertook the necessary organizational and coordination measures to facilitate the process of organ donation and transplantation.
Upon the official confirmation of brain death, the family of the deceased demonstrated an exceptional act of humanism and civic responsibility by consenting to the donation of organs. Consequently, for the first time in the history of the Caucasus region, a heart transplantation from a deceased donor was successfully performed.
The heart transplantation procedure was conducted at the Central Clinic by a highly qualified medical team under the leadership of the Chief Physician, Professor Kamran Musayev, with the highest standards of surgical excellence. The donor’s heart was transplanted into a patient born in 2006, a resident of the Tovuz district.
The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan extends its profound appreciation to the family of the donor for their noble and selfless decision, expresses deep gratitude to the medical professionals who demonstrated outstanding dedication and professionalism in fulfilling their duties, and conveys best wishes for continued success in their future endeavors.
