An international scientific and practical congress dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after Aziz Aliyev is being held on December 19–20 at the Heydar Aliyev Center and at the Institute itself.
The event is organized with the support of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan and is devoted to the rich history, scientific and educational activities, and modern achievements of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after Aziz Aliyev, which plays an important role in the development of postgraduate medical education in the country.
The main purpose of the congress is to discuss new scientific and practical achievements in medical science, to enhance doctors’ knowledge and skills, and especially to contribute to the scientific development of young physicians.
At the official opening ceremony of the congress held at the Heydar Aliyev Center, senior officials of the Ministry of Health and the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis, as well as heads of local and foreign higher medical education institutions, prominent scholars, and representatives of the healthcare community took part.
First, the National Anthem was played, after which the cherished memory of the national leader Heydar Aliyev and the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was honored with a minute of silence.

The address of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to the staff of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after Aziz Aliyev and the participants of the congress was read out by the Minister of Health, Teymur Musayev.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis, Ahliman Amiraslanov, emphasized that the 90-year activity of the Azerbaijan State Institute for Doctors’ Advanced Training named after Aziz Aliyev is a very important part of the history of Azerbaijan’s healthcare system. According to him, the scientists, physicians, and educators working at the Institute have made significant contributions to the development of Azerbaijani medical science.
The Chairman of the Congress and Rector of the Azerbaijan State Institute for Doctors’ Advanced Training named after Aziz Aliyev, Nazim Panahov, noted that the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on awarding the Institute’s staff with the “Progress” Medal is a high appraisal of the Institute’s activities. On behalf of the Institute’s staff, the Rector expressed gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for this high recognition.
In his speech, Nazim Panahov provided information about the history of the Institute’s establishment and its honorable path of development. It was noted that the majority of Azerbaijani doctors, as well as many physicians from foreign countries, have completed specialization or advanced training courses at the Institute and built their professional careers. Many glorious pages of the Institute’s history are associated with the name of Aziz Mammadkarim oglu Aliyev. For this reason, in 1962 the Institute was named after Aziz Aliyev. The major and valuable contributions of the prominent ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva, to the science of ophthalmology date back to the years when she worked precisely at this Institute. For more than 30 years, the Institute was headed by academician Mirmammad Javadzade, under whose leadership it developed and became one of the most renowned higher educational institutions of its time.

Afterwards, the Rector of Istanbul University (Türkiye), Osman Bülent Zülfikar, the Rector of Samarkand State Medical Institute (Uzbekistan), Jasur Rizayev, the Vice-Rector of the Russian Academy of Continuing Professional Medical Education, Aleksey Cherepov, and others delivered speeches, sharing their memories related to the Azerbaijan State Institute for Doctors’ Advanced Training named after Aziz Aliyev and congratulating the Institute’s staff on the occasion of the anniversary. They also wished them success in their future activities aimed at the development of medical science and healthcare in the country and the protection of public health.
